Aquitaine is a region of contrasts and holidays in Aquitaine reflect this diversity. The Côte d'Argent with over 60 miles of sandy beaches and numerous resorts, among them Archachon, Soulac-sur-Mer, Biarritz, and Guéthary, to the forests and tarns of the Pyrénées National Park, the vineyards of Bordeaux, and the unique culture of the Basque country.

Add to this the vast number of castles and château, the waterways and interesting towns and villages of the region, never forgetting the famous Lascaux cave with its extensive Palaeolithic art.

To really get a a feeling for the Basque tradition and way of life, leave your Bayonne hotels and walk through the capital of the French Basque country with its red and green shuttered riverside buildings and the pedestrianised streets of Grand Bayonne around the Cathedral Sainte-Marie. Mention Bordeaux and one's thoughts at first turn to the quality wines produced in the 1000 sq km area around the city, rather than to the city itself. However,the city of Bordeaux boasts a magnificent 18th century centre and an interesting water-front with Classical facades. Some 50,000 university students ensure a vibrant night-life, ensuring that the young particularly will enjoy their holidays in Aquitaine.

An 18 hole golf course would seem an odd claim to fame but in the case of the town of Pau, theirs was the first in continental Europe, a legacy of its popularity with the English throughout the nineteen century. An odd claim maybe, but an ideal course for golfing holidays with a little history.

The town provides stunning vistas of the Pyrénées mountains. The Château de Pau is the town's main visitor sight.
