The cathedral seen today is not the one originally envisaged and in fact remains incomplete.Construction was begun in 1225. In 1284 part of the choir vaults collapsed and repairs were
not completed for another century.
Work on constructing a tower, 3 stories of stone and one of wood, started in 1564 and seven years later that too collapsed.
There were various attempts to complete the cathedral but in 1605 it was decided to consolidate the existing structure and discontinue further work.
