The west of Brittany stands apart from the rest of France with a separate culture deeply rooted in its Celtic past. The Breton language is widely spoken here and traditional costume is still occasionally worn at festivals. The eastern side of the peninsular maintains little of these traditions.

The region of Brittany is dotted with megaliths (standing stones), erected some 6000 years ago, their original purpose unclear but thought to have had a religious significance. There are several thousand of these megaliths at the seaside resort of Carnac.

Stroll through the cobbled streets of the cathedral town of Quimper, a quiet town where you can take in the Breton architecture, walk beside the river or just 'watch the world go by' in one of the many street-side cafés - perfection in holidays in Brittany!
