Dominated by the Jura Mountains, approximately half of the Franche-Comté region is forested.
It is a land of caves,underground passages, lakes, rivers, woods and waterfalls.
The Poudrey caves, 20 km from Besançon, in the direction of Pontarlier - Lausanne takes you 70 metres
underground and is the largest chamber in France open to the public. After the 45 minute tour, the nearby DinoZoo prehistoric theme Park is a great diversion for children.
In winter, the Jura mountains a good alternative to the Alps for skiing, dog-sleighing or snowshoe trekking or in Spring for hiking, mountain biking, cycling and horse-riding.
Some 60 lakes provide excellent facilities for all manner of water sports. The pleasant countryside of Franche-Comté leaves much for the visitor to discover in this region of
undoubted character.
The capital of Franche-Comté is the 17th century town of Besançon. A short distance from Besançon lies the village of Alaise, reputed by many to be the centre of numerous 'lines of power' ('ley lines')
