THE MAKING OF PARIS
According to archaeologists a Celtic tribe known as the Parisii established a village near the Seine in approximately 250BC. Their village prospered and grew. The area, known as Lutetia , came under Roman control when taken by Labienus in 52BC. It was renamed Paris in 212. The Romans held the town until the mid 5th Century despite continued war and civil unrest, when it then fell to Childeric I. In 845 Paris was attacked by Viking raiders who demanded a huge ransom to leave. The Vikings returned in 885 with a massive invasion force. Odo, Count of Paris led the defence of the city through a ten-month Viking seige and became co-ruler of the Empire with Charles the Simple. His grand-nephew Hugh Capet was elected King of France in 987,making Paris his capital. As France grew both in size and power, so too did Paris. Beyond this,of course, Paris endured plague, changes of Monarch from French to English and back, revolution, religious massacre and much, much more. But this troubled history produced the Paris of today, a city of fine food, of romance and culture, the ages of history creating a magnificent venue for that perfect holiday break in France.
