Nîmes is a busy town with heavy traffic but despite this, has an air of relaxation which is hard to define.
Nimes was a prosperous textile manufacturing town in the 17th and 18th centuries and produced a cotton twill fabric that eventually became known as 'de Nîmes' (Denim)
Some magnificent Roman buildings, notably the amphitheatre 'Les Arénes', the Maison Carée (Picture bottom left) and the mighty aquaduct Pont du Gard have survived in Nîmes.
The beautiful 'Jardins de la Fontaine' (picture bottom right) were built around the 'Source de la Fontaine', a spring. Near its centre is the 'Tour Magne', one of a chain of defensive
towers, once part of the city walls.
During three festivals each year (a total of 11 days annually) daily corridas (bullfights) are held in the town's bullring.
