The weather of Nord/Pas-de-Calais is not to be compared with that of the more southern regions. Here it is cooler and windier but ideal for those wishing to escape the southern summer heat.

During WWII 338,000 French and British soldiers were dramatically plucked from the beaches around Dunkerque (Dunkirk).The Musée des Beaux Arts has an exhibition depicting the evacuation along with its collection of Old Masters, modern art and sculpture.

Today Dunkerque's wide beach and long promenade are filled with family holiday-makers, although many tourists 'pass through' as part of tours to WWII battle sites.
